erosion

When built, the chalet becomes a central node, one that is subjected to human and hydrological systems simultaneously — the two major forces to shape our macro-physical environment.

The Canadian Shield presents itself in the Long Lake Community like a massive, rolling volume; it has been smoothed and by the local elements. It is the same mass of rock that runs from the The Ridge within the park to the lake below. It is only natural that the chalet too has been shaped, this time around the human element; their movement and needs.

The Long Lake Community has a longstanding connection to cross-country skiing, which will be one of the major movements on site. It only made sense to form the built environment as a result of this activity; one thick mass has been eroded down into two; the two have been carved according to need. We now have a gateway and a Finnish-line.
